A couple goes to visit a friend for dinner, but a revelation and curiosity leads them to glimpse something dark that was not meant for human eyes.
I wrote the script based on a story concocted by Kyle Borg and myself, as part of a horror anthology collection. We Cannot See In The Dark is my love letter to H.P Lovecraft’s work, which lacks in film adaptations. Lovecraft’s work only really works when it witholds the horror from your eyes, horror than Men are not capable of understanding. The atmosphere of Lovecraftian horror is oppressing, creeping, hiding in the corner of your eye.
I knew I wanted to work with new actors. I knew Liz from the auditions for Calum Bradshaw’s The Great Great Game and pretty much knew instantly that she would be ideal. Danny came in to audition and blew my mind immediately. As for Fern, I took a bet. In her audition it clearly felt like she had the skills, but not yet the experience to use them maybe. The bet paid off, she delivered a nuanced, emotional performance that was just wonderful to watch. Chris showed me that he would be willing to go pretty far with the challenging physical aspects of the role, and again, he delivered, absolutely terrifying. As for Danny and Liz, they gave a very strong performance, elevating the central duo’s roles beyond what I had written on the page.
My good friend and DP, Monaya Abel, and her team, pushed themselves to the limit to turn our locations into those beautiful, grand places to make the characters feel small and uncomfortable. For the climax of the film, we ramped up the style and pulled off some in camera practical effects that I’m rather proud of.
